In some incredibly sad news, the Def Jam family and the music community as a whole suffered a sudden loss this weekend. Def Jam Vice President Shakir Stewart was found deceased Saturday night. He died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Shakir replaced Jay-Z as Vice President of Def Jam in June. He is responsible for signing talent such as Young Jeezy and Rick Ross. He was an Oakland, CA native and a graduate of ATLANTA'S own MOREHOUSE COLLEGE. While working for Hitco Music Publishing he signed Beyonce and while working for LaFace Records he signed Ciara. His eye for talent and love for music was obvious to everyone who knew him.
It is clear that this talented, young brother will be truly missed. My sincere condolences and prayers go out to his family, his Def Jam family, and his friends and colleagues.
